Taking The First Step
In life, taking that first step is usually the hardest thing to do. Reasons may vary but the main one is because of fear. Getting out of your comfort zone makes you vulnerable to disappointments and failures but you have to take the risks to be able to grow and achieve whatever you want.
This goes the same when you choose to work overseas as a registered nurse. Aside from passing the local licensure exams in your country, you also have to pass other exams like NCLEX. This isn’t easy and many have failed but you have to go through them in order to achieve your dreams.
The first thing to do is to apply for NCLEX. For the US, you have to choose which state you want to work in and send your application there, like the Louisiana state board of nursing for example. The processing usually takes a couple of months depending on the state.
You can apply in three ways. One, you can do it on your own. You will fill up the forms by yourself and gather the needed documents and send them via courier to the state of your choice. You can save a lot of money from this but there is also a high risk of committing mistakes. This will take you a longer time to redo the documents and send them again.
The second one is to apply through an NCLEX processing center. They will help you fill in the forms correctly, guide you in the proper documents to prepare, and other things related to filing for the NCLEX. Less mistakes will be made here since you have professional help so the processing time will also be shorter but this also comes with a fee.
The last one is to apply through an agency. Like an NCLEX processing center, they will guide you in filing the necessary documents but it doesn’t only end there. Once you have passed, they will also be the one to find you an employer in the state of your choice. Their fee is quite lesser than an NCLEX processing center but then you will be committed to stay with them until you finally get a job overseas. When you do get there that is when the agency takes out there fee – from your paycheck for the first couple of years.
Each option has its advantages and disadvantages. It is up to you to weigh them all out and choose which one will benefit you more. When you take that first step, all else will follow. Enjoy the trip!
