Start Of The Journey
Dressed in their gala uniform and college pins, all the nurses who passed the board exam last December 2007 gathered to take their oath. It was a two hour long ceremony that began with a mass followed by a couple of speeches from prominent people in the local nursing society, including a member of the board of nurses. It was hot, humid and over crowded. But despite of all that, smiles were on everyone’s faces, including the parents and family relatives who attended the event.
Indeed, it was a memorable moment for everyone. It was the culmination of all the years of hard work and sacrifice for both students and parents. It was way better than graduation and the pinning ceremony since it marked the start of a nurse’s journey in the professional world. Gone are the days of nursing students rushing up to their clinical instructors to ask for advice on how to perform certain procedures or ask for guidance in a topic they didn’t quite understand. Now, they are the ones whom nursing students will be rushing up to.
No one can really tell where these newly registered nurses might be in the years to come. The possibilities are endless. They might even see each other again or maybe not. There will be those who will be traveling far and wide across the globe to practice nursing and there will be some who will be left behind to render their services to their country. But no matter where they are, they will always remember the day when they first began their journey, during the oath taking ceremony.
