Nurse Ghost Stories

Back in college, my dutymates and I often had shifting schedules like real nurses. We were placed on morning, afternoon and graveyard shifts for weeks at a time. But among the three, I liked the graveyard shift the most.

Aside from the fact that it was the least busy shift (making it duty haven! It’s good to relax once in a while), there were a lot of food trips and ghost stories as well. We would go out in the middle of the night to eat noodles or barbecue in a nearby food shop and sip coffee or hot chocolate from the vending machine. It was a good 15 minutes just chilling in the cool night air.

When everything has been done, like taking the vital signs and giving out medications, we would all gather at the station with the other nurses and share our ghost stories. It looked like everyone had a story to share especially the nurses who were often assigned on graveyard shifts.

It wasn’t for the ears of the faint hearted. I for one wasn’t too keen on listening in to the conversation but I couldn’t help it. I didn’t have a story to share too since I haven’t had experienced any paranormal stuff yet so I listened most of the time.

Most stories that the nurses and nursing students told were about their experiences when they were on duty at different hospitals. A few stories hit home, particularly on the ward that we were in but it was kept to a minimum since it was too scary to even think that there were weird stuff happening just a few meters from where we were!

Most stories were about weird things going on in some rooms, images that gets caught on camera (some students bring their camera phones during duty hours and take pictures), weird sounds or murmurs that can be heard, and also apparitions of males or females clad in white!

There were also stories of ghost nurses who would visit the patients and give them their medications for the night. The nurse assigned to the patient would come in to give medications, the patient would then refuse saying that a nurse already came by and gave him/her some medicine. Of course, the nurse would ask the patient to describe the nurse but then no one in the ward would fit the description.

When things just go too seriously and everyone is so into the story, we give jokes to make ourselves laugh. Most of the time, they were nervous laughs just to show the others that we aren’t really afraid nor even believe in those stories. But all the while doing this, our eyes would go from left to right to see if there were odd things going around us.

It was really scary and exciting at the same time to hear about ghost stories! I get scared easily but I really love to scare myself of. I don’t really know why but I think it’s mainly about the thrill and the goosebumps. For now, I’ll have to wait for that moment when I get assigned on night shift again and continue where those ghost stories were left off!
