Generics Not As Good As Brand Drugs: Registered Nurse Survey

feature photo

There was a national online survey conducted by the American Society of Registered Nurses on April 28 to determine if generic drugs were as good as brand drugs. The results showed that 41% of the 781 Registered Nurses surveyed said that generics weren’t as good as brand drugs.

You would probably ask how come it is that way. Generics have been approved by the FDA to be as good as the brand drugs but this is found out to be just a theory. Yes, the generics and the brand drugs might have similar compositions but differs in its bioequivalent.

When it comes to accuracy in drug potency and dose, brand drugs make all the difference and that is why it is recommended by doctors especially on illnesses that requires consistency and precise levels of medication levels in the blood. Switching brand names can cause a disruption in this equilibrium.

What also differ between generics and brand drugs are its inactive ingredients. This would be the starch fillers, gum-like substances and other ingredients used to create the pill or the capsule. This will affect how the body breaks down the outer covering of the drug that leads to the release of the drug.

It would seem that brand names do matter when it comes to medications. It is best to use them then to make sure that the client is getting the best of the drug and also for the value of the money.
