Dodging Recruitment Scams And Hoaxes
There are a lot of people including nurses who are all applying for a job overseas. There are hundreds of new applicants every month and there are more who gets deployed to other countries in search for a better future. No one is a 100% sure that it will all turn out all right but everyone has high hopes for it to happen.
With all these fad on getting a job abroad, recruitment agencies have also sprung up all over the place. Each advertising that they are the best and will be able to send you off as soon as you get your papers done. They don’t do it for free of course. They have a professional fee that each applicant will have to pay in order to leave the country and find a job abroad.
For nurses, most offer easy and fast application for NCLEX to any state of choice even if it’s to the California Board of Nursing or to the Oklahoma Board of Nursing. There are also those who just don’t stop there. Once you’ve passed the NCLEX, they will be the ones to find a hospital for you to work in.
It sounds great but one should be wary of such recruitment agencies. Not all of them are what they seem up front. Some have a hidden agenda under the tables. There have also been lots of stories of getting scammed and becoming victims of human trafficking.
If you are planning to apply for a recruitment agency, you should take not of the following:
-
Do not apply at recruitment agencies not licensed by POEA.
-
Do not deal with licensed agencies without job orders.
-
Do not deal with any person who is not an authorized representative of a licensed agency.
-
Do not transact business outside the registered address of the agency. If recruitment is conducted in the province, check if the agency has a provincial recruitment authority
-
Do not pay more than the allowed placement fee. It should be equivalent to one month salary, exclusive of documentation and processing costs.
-
6.Do not pay any placement fee unless you have a valid employment contract and an official receipt.
-
7.Do not be enticed by ads or brochures requiring you to reply to a Post Office (P.O.) Box, and to enclose payment for processing of papers.
-
Do not deal with training centers and travel agencies, which promise overseas employment.
-
Do not accept a tourist visa.
-
Do not deal with fixers.
All is not lost. There are still people who work hard to prevent scams from happening but they can only do so much. It is your responsibility to get a background check on every recruitment agency you apply in.
