Are You Awake?
But why would I want you to watch it and why would I even mention a movie in a nursing blog? That’s because the setting for this movie is mainly in the hospital and it also includes surgeons, anesthetists and more importantly, nurses.
One would first think that everyone is real in the movie. The surgeon befriends his millionaire heart transplant patient and shows him what it feels like to be on the operating table. This part is actually quite important since it helps the patient to be more acquainted with the setting therefore, reducing his anxieties but then it’s all play acting just so he’d get Clay, played by Hayden Christensen, to go under the knife.
As the movie progresses, you’d learn that it was all a set up. Clay’s fiancé/wife Sam, played by Jessica Alba, and the rest of the surgical team had conspired against Clay. They all have lots of malpractice suits against them and they needed funds to pay it all off and they planned to get it from Clay. Sam played her role to have Clay marry her, kill him during a “failed” heart transplant and then get her share of the will.
This movie reflects the reality of the once highly upheld health care profession. There are doctors and nurses that are blinded by money and would take advantage of their patients. This isn’t right and should be avoided. Lives of people shouldn’t be toyed with.
This is a wake up call to all health care professionals even those who are still in school studying to earn their degrees but would soon be joining the league. We are in this profession to serve people and we should all do our part.
