A Diet Reduces Heart Attacks And Strokes?
A study was conducted for a span of 25 years and followed more than 88,000 healthy women on their diet. This is the largest study yet where there is strong evidence that a diet program can reduce the incidence of heart attacks and strokes.
The number of women who followed this diet was 24% less likely to develop heart attacks and 18% were less likely to have a stroke than other American women who didn’t follow the diet program. It might not be impressive to you but that is already a huge number considering that 2 in 5 women in the U.S. will eventually develop CVD (cardiovascular diseases) including heart attacks and strokes by the age of 50.
The DASH diet is so effective that results suggest that even healthy people should follow it. People who already have hypertension and are taking medication against it should also do the same. This diet modification can in time keep patients from taking medications.
The DASH or the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk and plant based protein. This diet has been proven to lower blood pressure in just 14 days especially on those who have moderately high hypertension and prehypertension. It also lowers cholesterol and with exercise, it also reduces insulin resistance.
Everyone should follow the DASH diet to live healthier lives. Modifying the diet to grains, fruits and vegetables might be hard to do but eventually people will get used to it and it will become a part of their lifestyle. Let us all fight against cardiovascular diseases.
